We are pleased to announce we are hosting an upcoming screening of The Milky Way, a sensitive, informative and sometimes challenging treatment of the very personal matter of breastfeeding.
Are you a mom? Planning to be a mom? If so, this film is a must-see. The U.S. has one of the lowest breastfeeding rates in the world; the simple act of nursing a baby elicits a broad range of reactions, especially when done in public. Two accomplished lactation consultants, Jennifer Davidson and Chantal Molnar, are fired up to change the cultural and political roadblocks placed in front of women wishing to breastfeed. They are ready to fight the fight to make things right.
They show how women can reclaim their birthright and return the nursing mother to her natural and crucial role in our society. They seek to bring back the community of mothers and change the way women support each other. More than a breastfeeding promotion film, this is a film by, for, and about women. It captures how mothers can access their inner knowledge, trust their babies and their own body’s wisdom, and why they should.
Women’s stories, leading lactation professionals, archival footage, religious iconography, and formula advertisements show how mothers’ authority was co-opted by medical professionals, and how they have been pressured to forfeit their nourishing breasts in favor of highly sexualized breasts.
Bloom is very excited to be co-hosting this film along with the Spokane Feminist Forum and Maile Allen, a Spokane resident and nursing mother. There will be post-film discussion and a Q&A with local area lactation consultants and professionals. The screening will take place on Saturday, June 14th at 2:30pm at the Magic Lantern Theater. It is important to note that this sceening can only take place if 71 tickets are sold by June 7th, so we are asking those who wish to attend the event to purchase their tickets as soon as possible.
